What is an Endodontist?
Endodontists are dental specialists who focus on diagnosing and treating diseases of the dental pulp, root canals and tissues surrounding the root of the tooth. All endodontists first complete a five-year general dental degree, followed by clinical experience in general practice. They must then be accepted into a highly competitive, three-year full-time postgraduate program that focuses exclusively on endodontics.
Upon completion of the program and successful examination, the clinician earns a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontics, which allows them to register with the Dental Board as a Specialist Endodontist. Most endodontists then restrict their practice to endodontic procedures and related treatments.
In total, a registered specialist endodontist completes approximately eight years of full-time study, developing the advanced diagnostic and technical skills required to manage complex cases with precision.
What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy) involves removing inflamed or infected pulp tissue from inside a tooth, cleaning and shaping the root canal system, and sealing it to prevent reinfection. This treatment is often necessary in cases of deep decay, trauma, cracks, or extensive restorations that have resulted in pulpitis or necrosis.
Signs you may need root canal treatment include:
Spontaneous or lingering tooth pain, particularly in response to hot or cold
Swelling or tenderness near a tooth
Discolouration or darkening of a tooth
A history of trauma or extensive dental work
Presence of an abscess or sinus tract (gum pimple)
Your general dentist may also detect signs on x-rays, such as radiolucencies at the root tip, which may prompt a referral for specialist evaluation.
What causes dental pulp or nerve problems?
The dental pulp can become inflamed or infected due to several factors. Common causes include:
Deep decay extending into the dental pulp
Repeated dental procedures on a tooth
Cracks or fractures, often invisible to the naked eye
Trauma, even from years prior
Periodontal-endodontic lesions
Regardless of the cause, the primary objective is to remove the source of infection or inflammation while preserving the natural tooth’s function and structure whenever possible.
Can these problems be treated?
Absolutely. Modern endodontic treatment is highly successful and involves minimal discomfort. Our approach typically includes:
A comprehensive consultation, medical and dental history, and diagnostic imaging (including 3D CBCT scans if needed)
Cleaning and shaping of the root canal system under an operating microscope
Sealing the canals with biocompatible materials
Coordination with your general dentist for the permanent restoration of the tooth
Most root canal procedures can be completed in two or three appointments. In more complex cases, or where retreatment is required, additional visits may be necessary.
What happens at Sincerity Dental?
At your initial consultation, we’ll take a thorough medical and dental history and perform a detailed assessment of the affected tooth or teeth. This may include advanced imaging (e.g. cone beam CT) to help identify issues not visible on traditional x-rays.
We will then discuss our findings with you and your dentist and develop a tailored treatment plan. Our focus is always on preserving natural teeth wherever possible and achieving long-term outcomes through precise, conservative care.
Will treatment be uncomfortable?
Your comfort is our priority. All endodontic procedures are performed under local anaesthesia, and we take great care to ensure your experience is as pain-free and relaxed as possible.
If you’re feeling anxious, please let us know—we’re happy to explore options to help make your treatment more comfortable. Some minor discomfort is expected following treatment, but this typically resolves within a few days.
How much does it cost?
A detailed quote will be provided following your initial consultation. Being treated by a specialist doesn’t necessarily mean higher costs. In fact, early intervention by an experienced endodontist can prevent further complications—and potentially avoid more extensive and expensive restorative or surgical procedures later on.
At Sincerity Dental, we’re committed to fair, transparent pricing and delivering value through efficient, expert care.
Will I get a rebate from my health fund?
Most private health funds offer rebates for specialist endodontic services, though the amount will depend on your level of extras cover. We recommend contacting your fund directly with the item numbers provided in your treatment plan for more accurate information.
We do not have preferred provider arrangements with any health fund—our independence allows us to focus solely on what’s best for you.
